Before every pitching session, we go through a step-by-step dynamic warm-up inspired by Tom House and the National Pitching Association. This warm-up is designed to increase blood flow to the throwing arm and activate all of the throwing muscles needed to have a successful day of training. We also use Jager Bands as a big part of or warm-up to not only activate our throwing muscles but to increase arm strength and durability. Depending on the athlete and their weaknesses, we like to end our activation phase with throwing the football around. There are many benefits to throwing the football as baseball players. Some of those benefits being promoting a more efficient arm path and strengthening the shoulder.
Many pitching instructors look down on Driveline and plyo ball routines, but I have found that plyo ball's actually do more good than harm if done correctly. Plyo ball throws were a staple in my Tommy John Rehab back in 2019 and is a training tool that I continue to use to this day. Every lesson, before we even pick up a baseball we go through a plyo ball routine made up of five different drills. Plyo balls can promote good mechanics, increase arm strength, and increase velocity as well. Many of our athletes have benefited from throwing plyo balls as it has been a big contributing factor to the improvement of our athletes.
We throw off of the mound almost every single lesson. Weather it's a bull pen, dry reps, or a velo day, we are always doing something on the mound. In games, pitchers throw off of mounds and we practice like we play. I am a big believer in making practice feel as game like as possible! Our mound work can vary from session to session depending on our focus for that day.
One of the most organic ways to train velocity is through long toss. In our program, we try to have our athletes long toss at least 1-2 times a week and base our long toss program off of Alan Jager's long toss program, which focuses on proper extension and compression phases to help build a healthier and stronger arm. We encourage our athletes to long toss when they are not training with us. The athletes who utilize long toss the most are the athletes that see the most success in our program
Arm Care is the most important part of the program, the foundation of this program is built on arm care. The most important part about being a pitcher is having a healthy arm, so that is why every single player that goes through the Elite10Pitching program will receive a free arm care program and be put through a series of arm care routines during their time with Elite10Pitching.
